The suspect’s wife had previously filed two reports against him for criminal intimidation, one in 2016 and another in 2023. After the most recent report was lodged in December last year, the police arrested Hafizul, but the investigation is still ongoing. Following the incident, the wife hired bodyguards for her protection.

At the airport, Hafizul approached his wife while throwing firecrackers, causing injuries to two members of the public. He then opened fire about three to four meters away from his wife, who was accompanied by two bodyguards. Hafizul then fled the scene in a car parked at level two of Block C, believed to be heading northwards. Around 30 people were present at the scene, including members of the public and the airport’s auxiliary police.

Hafizul and his wife, Farah Md Isa, own a travel agency together and were in the midst of a divorce. The wife is believed to be in the early stages of pregnancy. She has since posted on Facebook that her bodyguard was shot and a police report has been lodged. However, she has been advised not to make any statements regarding the case for the time being.

Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Commissioner Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain held a press conference at KLIA on Apr. 14, urging anyone who spots the suspect to share the information with the police but not to act alone, as the suspect is considered armed and dangerous.

She was told that her husband’s condition was critical, and he needed to be put into a medically induced coma due to severe bleeding and difficulty breathing. The bodyguard had been working as a personal bodyguard on a part-time basis before Ramadan.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain stated on Apr. 14 that the suspect is still believed to be in Malaysia, as reported by Malay Mail. The police have emphasized that the shooting was personally motivated and is not linked to any terrorist activities or groups. The commissioner assured the public that the airport is safe for travelers, but the safety measures arrangement at the airport will be reviewed. The case is being investigated as an attempted murder and also under Section 8 of the Firearms Act 1960 for unlawful possession of a weapon.
