The dispute that led to the fatal confrontation arose from issues related to the collection of illegal gambling bets amounting to RM10,000 (approximately S$2,870), as reported by China Press

Liu’s 42-year-old boyfriend was also injured during the altercation and was promptly transported to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital for medical treatment.

The incident occurred around 10 am in a store situated at Taman Rasi Jaya, Menglembu, Perak, casting a somber shadow over the community.

Argument over collection of illegal gambling bets

Liu Xiulian, the victim, was the proprietor of a mobile phone accessories shop, and reports suggest that she may have been involved in illegal gambling activities, functioning as a bookie. Her store, in operation for around six months, became the focal point of the fatal disagreement.

The 54-year-old employee, responsible for collecting the gambling bets on Liu’s behalf, was unable to hand over the RM10,000, leading to a heated argument between the two. The dispute escalated into violence, resulting in Liu’s tragic demise and injuries to her boyfriend.

Killer detained and tied up

Disturbing images of the aftermath circulated on social media, revealing a crime scene stained with blood and depicting three individuals lying on the ground. A recovered knife, bent from the impact, was indicative of the intensity of the confrontation. The assailant himself sustained injuries during the incident.

Quick-thinking bystanders prevented the assailant from escaping by tying him up with ropes until the arrival of the police, who took him into custody. The Perak police, in a statement, expressed gratitude for the public’s cooperation in facilitating the swift apprehension.

Neighbours shared insights with China Press reporters, describing Liu Xiulian as a divorcee and a benevolent individual known for supporting fellow shopkeepers by purchasing their goods to aid their businesses, which she would later donate. Tragically, Liu left behind a daughter and son, both approximately ten years old.

Investigated for murder

The police, responding to a public call around 10:55 am reporting a fight involving a sharp weapon, conducted a background check on the suspect, revealing four offenses on his record. The incident is being investigated as murder, and the police have secured a remand order from the courts, underlining the gravity of the case. Liu Xiulian’s body was conveyed to the morgue of Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital at approximately 1:39 pm. The community mourns the loss of a kind-hearted individual while grappling with the shock and tragedy that unfolded in their midst.
