Shin Min Daily News reported that a group of hawkers, customers and residents living nearby then decided to take advantage of the “heng suay” situation and bet on the affected stall’s unit number for 4D.

Lo and behold, the numbers won the consolation prize for the 4D draw that weekend with one of the punters even winning $3,000.

About 50 hawkers, customers and nearby residents had bet on the unit number of the stall, 0141, for the weekend 4D draw on Sunday (14 May) and it came out as one of the 10 consolation prizes.

According to Shin Min Daily News, one of the residents placed a $1 bet on a few variations of the unit number and won $60.

Her aunt was more “heng”, placing three different bets on the unit number and winning $3,000; while a nearby provision shop owner said that at least 50 people had bet on the stall’s unit number, with tens of thousands of dollars being won by all of them.

The owner of the affected fish soup stall, Ms Zheng, also bet on her stall’s unit number and she won $600, which she considers as a little blessing among the misfortune, according to SMDN.

Recap

According to Shin Min Daily News, about 20 stalls were forced to halt their business operations for a while because they all shared the same exhaust duct as the affected fish soup stall, which was severely damaged by the raging fire.

The owner of the fish soup stall said that their 60-year-old stall assistant was frying eggs at the time when the stove suddenly caught on fire.

The staff then noticed that the exhaust was on fire before turning off the gas and evacuating from the stall, but still suffered burn injuries and was sent to the hospital.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said that they were alerted to a fire that broke out at Block 20 Marsiling Lane on Thursday at about 8.20am, involving a kitchen exhaust duct at the hawker centre.

Firefighters managed to put out the fire using a water jet, and before their arrival, about 40 people at the hawker centre had already evacuated themselves.
