A 56-year-old man in Thailand walked 1,200km to propose to his girlfriend, leaving his hometown in Nakhon Nayok in central Thailand and heading towards the Satun province in southern Thailand, according to The Straits Times.
The man, Suthep Promjit, left his hometown on 14 January with the aim of reaching his girlfriend’s hometown by Valentine’s Day on 14 February.
The couple, both 56 years old, first met on TikTok about 5 years ago.
For context, the two provinces are about 1,200km apart and if he were to drive non-stop, it would take him 16 hours to reach her, and walking would take him at least 200 hours or more to reach her if he walked without taking any breaks.
Wants to spread a message
Promjit said that he wants people who mistreat their families and loved ones, as well as those who are unfaithful to their wives, to pay attention to his journey.
After walking for almost a month, he has covered about 1,100km of his journey and arrived at his girlfriend’s hometown in Trang with his 50-year-old friend Niwat Thongwithi in tow, who is accompanying him on his “Saleng”, a custom scooter.
Based on estimations and the remaining distance left, Promjit should be reaching his girlfriend’s home by Tuesday, making it just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Lost a lot of weight
Promjit said that ever since he started on his journey for love, he has lost more than 17kg and weighs about 40kg now, but he is happy because the 1,200km walk proves his love for his future wife.
He added that after they get married, he is planning to travel around Thailand with her.
