Six men aged between 18 and 27 will be charged in court on Jul. 29 over their alleged involvement in a violent assault in Yishun that left a 48-year-old man unconscious with serious injuries.
The incident took place on the evening of Jul. 24 near Block 243 Yishun Ring Road, where police were alerted to a fight at around 8pm.
When officers arrived, they found the 48-year-old victim lying injured in a nearby car park. He had sustained head and body injuries and was taken unconscious to hospital for treatment.
Six to face rioting charges
According to Shin Min Daily News, Following investigations and the use of police camera footage, officers identified and arrested seven suspects between Jul. 25 and Jul. 28.
Six of them, aged between 18 and 27, are set to be charged with rioting on Jul. 29.
Investigations are still ongoing against a seventh suspect, a 33-year-old man.
Under Singapore law, the offence of rioting carries a maximum sentence of seven years’ jail and caning.
In a statement, the police said they would not tolerate acts of violence or blatant disregard for the law and would continue to take firm action against those responsible.
Witnesses describe brutal attack
Residents who witnessed the incident described a violent scene unfolding near the estate’s car park.
A 57-year-old resident told Shin Min Daily News that he noticed a group of people gathered in the area and believed a quarrel had escalated into a fight.
Another resident, aged 18, said he heard the commotion from his flat and looked out of his window, where he allegedly saw several people surrounding a man and repeatedly attacking him.
According to the witness, the victim had already fallen to the ground and was unable to get back up, but the group allegedly continued punching and kicking him.
After the attackers left, a pool of blood was reportedly visible near the motorcycle parking area. Scattered debris, a detached shoe sole and several cigarette butts were also found at the scene.
The case remains under investigation.
