Police Probe Alleged Illegal Street Race After Johor Expressway Blocked
Police in Johor have launched an investigation after a video showing an alleged illegal street race on the Linkedua Expressway went viral online.
The incident reportedly took place on Aug 22 along the stretch between the Senai Utara Toll Interchange and the Johor Premium Outlets (JPO) Interchange. Footage circulating on social media appeared to show a group of motorcyclists and other individuals stopping traffic on the expressway to create space for two riders to race.
The gathering allegedly ended with fireworks being set off on the expressway, raising further concerns over road safety and the potential danger posed to motorists travelling through the area.
Traffic Stopped To Allow Alleged Race
Malaysia’s Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) confirmed that police had received a report concerning the viral footage.
According to investigators, the video showed two motorcyclists allegedly taking part in a race while other individuals appeared to obstruct traffic. The incident is believed to have occurred on the expressway connecting the Senai Utara area with the JPO interchange.
The apparent decision to stop traffic on a public expressway could have created significant risks for other road users, particularly if approaching motorists were unaware that the roadway had been deliberately blocked.
Police have since identified an individual believed to have been present at the scene. Investigators are also working with PLUS Malaysia Berhad, the operator of the expressway, to obtain CCTV recordings that could help establish what happened.
Police Working To Identify Riders And Spectators
The Kulai JSPT is currently investigating the incident and attempting to identify the motorcyclists as well as other people who were allegedly involved in the gathering.
The investigation comes as authorities continue to take action against dangerous driving and unauthorised racing activities on Malaysian roads. Illegal street racing can put not only participants but also unsuspecting motorists at serious risk, particularly when it takes place on high-speed expressways.
The presence of fireworks has also drawn attention because the activity allegedly occurred while the roadway was being used as a makeshift racing area.
Police said further information would be provided as investigations progress. The identities of those involved and any potential offences will depend on evidence gathered from the viral footage, CCTV recordings and other investigative findings.
For motorists travelling through Johor, the incident is another reminder of the potential dangers posed by unauthorised road gatherings and reckless driving on major expressways.
