According to a news article from The Star, Malaysia’s Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob wrote to Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong earlier today (7 Nov) seeking leniency in a case to save a Malaysian man sentenced to the gallows here in Singapore.
The article wrote that Malaysia’s PM has asked Singapore to consider a stay of execution and seek a new application for presidential clemency.
D.Nagaethran, the man in this case, was claimed by his lawyers to have disabilities intellectually.
He was arrested on 22 April 2009 for the offence of smuggling 42.72 grams of diamorphine.
The Singapore High Court then sentenced him to death on 22 Nov 2010.
The sentence was appealed against and it went all the way through to the final stage before his appeal for presidential clemency was rejected on 1 June 2020.
He will be hanged on 10 Nov 2021 according to schedule.
