CHINESE NATIONAL INSULTED RELIGION ONLINE AND MOCKED RAPE VICTIM

A student from Temasek Polytechnic, Sun Sicong, 21-years-old, is being accused of posting misogynistic remarks about a rape victim on Instagram, as well as posting remarks against Islam.

Sun is a Singapore permanent resident who has had his court documents amended to indicate that he is a Chinese national – it previously indicated that he was Singaporean.

Sun was in court on 14 January and was charged with harassment, uploading online remarks with the deliberate intention of wounding the religious feelings of others as well as being in possession of obscene films.

What happened?

Sun allegedly created posts on Instagram with anti-Islam sentiments between 2018 and 2019.

Sun also allegedly harassed a rape victim by creating posts on Instagram on 7 June 2020, and making remarks about the victim’s recount of her ordeal.

He also allegedly downloaded two obscene videos in April and May 2020 that were allegedly found in his mobile phone.

The police previously said that they received many reports about an Instagram user who posted insensitive comments and threats that could incite violence against the Muslim community, and that the posts contained hate comments that could wound religious feelings.

Sun was arrested on 8 June 2020 by officers from Jurong Police Division and they seized his belongings, including a computer and a mobile phone.

The Singapore Police added that they take a serious view of acts that can damage racial and religious harmony in Singapore.

Temasek Poly also previously released a statement on the incident.
