The government of the United Kingdom warned that the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, could very possibly be prosecuted for war crimes.
The UK government issued the warning yesterday following the shelling of Kharkiv that destroyed a school, resulting in at least 11 civilians being killed.
Pictures of the aftermath surfaced, showing at least one little girl killed in the Russian attack, with a doctor who tried to save one of the children saying “show this to Putin”.
The International Criminal Court is investigating alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity by the Russian forces since the Crimean seizure in 2014.
A former war crimes prosecutor, Justice Secretary Dominic Raab spoke to BBC saying that there’s a “very real risk that they end up in the dock of a court in The Hague”.
Raab added that if the ICC decided to take action, he is sure the UK and its allies will support them.”
The attack in the town of Okhtyrka was slammed by Amnesty Internation chief Agnes Callamard, denouncing it as “stomach turning” and that it should be investigated as a war crime.
She also highlighted a preschool in northeastern Ukraine being hit by cluster bombs, resulting in three deaths which included a child; the preschool was used as a civilian shelter.
