736 cases of dengue fever infections were reported in the week of 10 April to 16 April, the highest since 2020, when 937 cases were reported from 30 August to 5 September 2020.
The National Environment Agency (NEA) said that Singapore is currently facing a serious dengue situation and could see a major outbreak this year.
There are 159 active clusters in Singapore, of which 33 of them had more than 10 cases.
Over 4,7000 cases of dengue were reported as of 16 April, and NEA said that they are expecting a surge in the months to come.
In comparison, a total of 5,245 cases of dengue were reported for the whole of last year.
NEA said that the surge in dengue cases are being driven by 3 main factors, mainly the warm, rainy and humid weather leading to a high number of Aedes mosquitoes breeding.
The second factor is the serotype 3 dengue virus, which was previously uncommon, now circulated along with the serotype 2 dengue virus.
The third factor is that more people are staying and working from home, leading to greater exposure to the mosquitoes.
