They also said in a report that Idia will soon surpass China as the country with the most number of people next year.

Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN, said that the population milestone is a reminder of “our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another.”

However, despite the forecasted increase in world population, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs said that the world population is growing at its slowest pace since 1950.

The population of the world should hit 8.5 billion by the year 2030, 9.7 billion by the year 2050 and 10.4 billion by 2080, before the level steadies until the 2100s.

More than half of the forecasted increase in the world’s population is expected to be concentrated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.
