GIRL SAYS “RETAIL JOB IS BENEATH HER”, RATHER BEG PARENTS FOR MONEY

My best friend (20f) is unemployed. She was fired from her previous job due to her availability changing and them deciding she was more of a problem than she was worth.

It was hard on her, and my girlfriend G and I did the best we could to cheer her up. we encouraged her to look at new jobs and find something, and she said she would. That was in April.

V had a paid internship. some weeks she would work over 20 hours, some weeks she would work 0-5. she was struggling to purchase necessities such as food, and G and i did our best to ease the financial burdens off of her. She would always pay her share of basic stuff, we would buy the little things and help her.

V also has been having medical issues, and is in a lot of pain. usually though, when she was working 20+ hour weeks at her internship, she didnt complain about the pain. G and i encouraged her to find a job, because working seemed to take her mind off of the pain she was feeling. she agreed, but said that she didnt want to take the gamble of having to go home or miss work. she never left her internship early or skipped a day. i understand the pain aspect, but it was fishy to me that she didnt feel pain while working.

she only now started seriously looking for jobs when she had the whole school holiday. she was hit with the realization that she will most likely have to beg her parents for money.

she can only work two days a week. V has applied to every receptionist job in the area. they get back to her, but when she tells them her availability, they tell her no. every single job that gets back to her tells her no when she says she can only work two days a week.

G and i have encouraged her to find a retail job. she refuses to do fast food, and as someone who has worked fast food, i understand. she thinks that retail is beneath her, and will not even consider looking at some. there is a store near our apartment that caters to her interests and that i think she would ve a perfect fit in. she always shuts me down and says that she wants a job that will “improve her resume.”

she just got turned down for another receptionist job due to her availability, and got upset i mentioned the store across the street. she said she is going to keep looking for the job that she wants, even though she has burnt out every available receptionist job. they simply will not take her with her availability.
