SCDF’S HAZMAT TEAM ACTIVATED AFTER 9 ITE STUDENTS FELL SICK AFTER NAPFA TEST

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) activated their Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) response team on the morning of 6 February after 9 students fell sick following a NAPFA fitness test at the ITE College East campus.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said that they received a call for help on Monday at about 10.30 am, at ITE College East’s address at 10 Simei Avenue.

9 people were conveyed to Changi General Hospital, comprising of male and female students who had just taken part in the 2.4km run of their National Physical Fitness Award (Napfa) test.

The Napfa test involved about 396 students.

The SCDF said that they deployed their Hazmat team and a fire engine to the premises to monitor and perform tests in the vicinity.

However, they found no abnormalities in the surrounding area.

The principal of ITE College East, Yek Tiew Ming spoke to The Straits Times and said that 8 of the 9 students have been discharged from the hospital, while the remaining hospitalised student is in stable condition and awaiting discharge.

Dr Yek added that the affected students were accompanied by their parents and teachers throughout their hospital stay, and added that safety measures were put in place before the 2.4km run of the Napfa test.

He said that the students were told to stop if they feel unwell at any point and that there were checkpoints with water dispensers set up for the students who couldn’t complete the run.

At the moment, ITE has suspended their Napfa tests temporarily.
