I was never one to take risks. I’m the kind of person who sticks to the same routine and avoids any kind of confrontation. That’s why I was so surprised when I finally mustered up the courage to write a letter to my old schoolmate and confess my feelings for her.
I had been thinking about her for months. I knew I had to tell her how I felt and so I decided to do it the old-fashioned way: a letter. I wrote for hours, pouring out my heart and soul, telling her how I had been feeling for so long. I finished the letter and sealed it in an envelope, my heart racing with anticipation.
I sent the letter off in the mail and waited for her response. When a few weeks passed without a response, I started to worry. Maybe she hadn’t received the letter? Maybe she had received it and was too scared to respond? After a month of waiting, I finally got my answer.
It was in the form of a letter, but it wasn’t the response I was expecting. Instead of expressing her feelings, she tore my letter to shreds in front of the entire class. Apparently, she had been talking to some of our old classmates and realized that I had feelings for her. She was angry and embarrassed and let out her frustration on my letter.
The entire class was stunned into silence. No one had expected her to react that way. I was humiliated. All my hard work and courage had been for nothing. I wanted to hide my face in shame, but I couldn’t move. I was frozen in place, not sure what to do next.
After a few moments, the shock finally wore off and I was able to move. I quickly gathered my things and left the classroom, trying to hide the tears streaming down my face. I had never felt so embarrassed and ashamed in my life.
I never wrote another letter to my old schoolmate after that. I was too scared to take the risk again. I had put my heart on the line and it had been torn to shreds. I had learned my lesson; never mess with the heart of someone you care about.
