A glass panel at Nex Food Republic inexplicably shattered for no apparent reason on Monday, but thankfully nobody was injured in the incident.
The incident happened on 27 February at about 2.22pm, at the Food Republic food court in Basement 2 of the shopping mall.
A spokesperson for Food Republic said that the glass door at the entrance of the food court had shattered for no apparent reason.
A diner at the food court, Ms Chen, spoke to Lianhe Zaobao and said that she was having a drink with a friend at the food court at the time when they were suddenly interrupted by a loud bang.
The glass panel that was about 2 to 3 tables away from her suddenly “exploded” and shattered into glass fragments all over the floor.
She said that there was a young man who was sitting at a table next to the glass panel, but none of the glass landed on him.
The glass panel had earlier been cordoned off before it shattered, with a sign telling visitors not to use that entrance.
Food Republic said that their team noticed that the automatic sliding glass door was not working properly the day before during their closing hours.
The store opening team made further assessments on 27 February and cordoned off the area with signs redirecting customers to other entrances, before it shattered.
It actually helped prevent injuries to the customers because they avoided using that door as a result.
The management of the food court and the mall are working together to replace the glass door, and Food Republic reiterated that they take the matter very seriously as the safety of their patrons is of the utmost importance to them.
