She inadvertently got her boyfriend in trouble with the post, and he is set to be detained and fined by the Malaysian police.

Gatita Yan’s boyfriend, Tay Wee Shen, was seen in her Instagram story sleeping behind the wheel of his BMW, with the former captioning her story in Mandarin “Sleeping ah? hahaha”

Sin Chew Daily reported Perak police chief Datuk Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri as saying that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will be detaining and fining him for putting his BMW on autopilot and falling asleep while driving on the highway.

The Malaysian police are still investigating the current whereabouts of the couple, and it isn’t clear if they are still in Ipoh where they were seen heading towards on 28 March, last Tuesday.

Datuk Yusri said in an interview with Sin Chew Daily that Tay’s antics of driving while sleeping is both dangerous and illegal.

The whole situation came about when Gatita Yan posted an Instagram story of her boyfriend driving while sleeping with his hands off the wheel, but she got him into trouble.

His feet were also seen off the pedals of the BMW.

The video on her Instagram Story was swiftly deleted but it was too late, because netizens had screen recorded the video before she took it down, and they reported it to the police.

Datuk Yusri added that he would be directing the traffic police division in the area to track down the couple and detain them.

The Royal Malaysia Police also clarified the legality of the situation, saying that drivers are allowed to use the automatic driving function of their cars but they cannot be sleeping while driving and that both of their hands must be on the steering wheels at all times.

He added that they will not be tolerating any acts that may endanger the lives of other road users, and will be investigating the incident under Section 10 of the Road Transport Act 1987.
