It was earlier reported that an off-duty full-time national serviceman with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), had gone missing in the lake at Kekek Quarry in Pulau Ubin.
The 22-year-old’s (Lianhe Zaobao reported that he is 20-year-old but The Straits Times reported that the deceased was 22 years old) body was found floating in the lake earlier today (16 April).
The body was subsequently retrieved from the lake.
According to The Straits Times, the Singapore Police Force had received a call for help on Saturday (15 April) at about 12.33 am.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that at about 1 pm earlier today, a body was spotted floating in the waters of Kekek Quarry.
SCDF rescuers who were performing search operations in the quarry then retrieved the body and the man was then pronounced dead at the scene by an SCDF paramedic.
The police said that they are not suspecting any foul play, according to their preliminary investigations.
Lianhe Zaobao reported that about 8 relatives and friends of the deceased had arrived at the scene at about 11 am earlier today with priests from the local island’s Hindu temple to pray together, before leaving the island together at about 2.15 pm.
Lianhe Zaobao earlier reported a resident who lives on the island, 65-year-old Wang Yuan Qian, said that he saw the deceased’s friend seeking for help on Friday (14 April) at about 7 pm near the Kekek quarry.
Wang heard from the missing man’s family and friends that he might have gone swimming in the lake at Kekek Quarry and was believed to have jumped over the fence surrounding the lake to gain access to it.
Zaobao had earlier reported that Kekek Quarry, which is situated on the northern side of Pulau Ubin, is about 40 metres deep and infested with pythons and crocodiles.
The deceased also didn’t have his mobile phone with him at the time when he went missing.
