Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi was performing a spot check at the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Checkpoint at the Sultan Iskandar Building in Johor Bahru, ahead of the Hari Raya Puasa weekend tomorrow (22 April), where longer waiting times and heavy traffic are expected for travellers heading to Malaysia.
And he was not happy with what he saw during his spot checks.
The minister had previously told the customs officials at Johor Bahjru to open all immigration counters without interruption, but during his spot check, found that about half of the counters were closed, according to SG Road Vigilante – SGRV on Facebook.
Hafiz was seen in a video now circulating online, questioning one of the customs officials “how many lanes are open?” while inspecting the vehicles going through customs.
The visibly upset minister was seen telling the customs official to sort out their human resources at the checkpoint, lamenting how the “issue has been going on for too long” and telling them “I’m here, I’m going to wait until it’s settled.”
Hafiz told the Malaysian media on 19 April that at the moment, the level of efficiency at their checkpoints is at 80%, and added that he had requested for all the immigration counters to be working.

- After so many years why now? Yes finally someone does a spot check. Should do it often so they are on the ball.
- Use up so much money to build world class facilities.. but always underutilized .. build so many lanes but minimal useage.. manpower another issue or more of an excuse.. just walk into any Malaysia government departments.. same thing.. u see minimal counter open.. with large crowd waiting and many manpower talking or playing Hp… So what head of department come and visit.. it’s the working don’t give a damn attitude.. Just take drastic action.. sack them or transfer… It’s been going on for far too long..
- After 5 passport they will chit chat for 15 to 20 minute and will continue the whole process again. Give the officer a set of kpi to achieve
- This what happened to us last month.. 5 counter close at one time
- For the first time, I felt he understood the people’s consent. Respect
