A man in Singapore, Jason Soo, recently found himself in the midst of criticism after sharing a video on his Instagram page @jazsoo.

The video, posted on May 17, showcased Soo and his family utilizing a hack to obtain extra ice cream from the IKEA ice cream machine, according to a report by Mothership.

In the footage, Soo’s daughter is seen purchasing the S$0.50 Soya ice cream at IKEA. Just as the machine is about to dispense the ice cream onto the cone, she swiftly lifts the cone from the handle.

Soo, in the video’s caption, referred to this act as a hack to “get more ice cream at the same price.” He explained that lifting the ice cream cone prevents the machine from detecting its weight, resulting in a larger serving.

Netizens call it stealing

The hack seemed to have worked, as the machine dispensed an increased amount of ice cream onto the cone. However, this video sparked a wave of backlash from netizens.

In the comments section, several netizens compared Soo’s actions to stealing and argued that he should have paid for the additional ice cream.

Concerns were also raised about the hygienic aspect of the hack, as ice cream residue was left behind on the machine’s cone handle.

Saw the hack online

On the entire hoo-ha of the incident, Soo told Mothership that he had initially seen the hack on social media and explained that he decided to try it out during his visit to IKEA on May 17.

Soo admitted that some of the criticisms were valid but mentioned that he did not give it much thought and simply viewed it as a lighthearted endeavour.

Soo expressed that he did not anticipate attempting the hack again in the future. It is worth noting that this hack first gained attention on TikTok back in 2020 through a video that amassed over 29 million views by May 20, 2023.
