Being poor takes up so much time. I don’t know how else to quite word this. My wife and I recently had this conversation just a day ago.
I was just venting a bit about how when you have a lack of money, you have to spend so much time researching and strategizing about how to ‘stretch a dollar’.
Looking up on forums like this one for hacks, tips, and whatsnot. Looking up coupons here and there. Walking around town to because a particular item(s) are a few cents cheaper at different locations…just a few examples.
It’s like, I’ve found myself having buyer’s remorse while I’m in line at Valudollar, wondering if I’m making the right purchases at the right time, despite the fact what I have is just a handful of necessary items.
On a better note, I also found quite a few toiletries marked down to just $1 the other day, and I was so excited.
I see some of my friends always going out, taking really cool trips, and yet, this is the poorest I’ve ever been.
Hoping that all of this will be a bit better next year, but sometimes I doubt that too. But, I digress.
I know that even rich people sit down and track their spending; they have to be smart with their money too, after all.
That said, it would be nice to have enough and just go into the store and do some regular shopping and not have that nagging feeling of “I wonder how tight things are gonna be after this?”

- It is true that to save money you do have to spend time and mental energy. One approach is to simplify your life to a point that you have to make fewer spending decisions. For example, my breakfast and dinner(mostly two meals) are more or less the same everyday with a few tweaks. This makes it easier for me to shop and I have a good sense of where to buy what at good prices. This reduces my expense of mental energy on finding good deals.
But yes, it would be nice to just walk in to a store and pick up whatever you need. In many ways, I have stopped buying a lot of stuff because things are so expensive these days, and honestly I don’t miss it. - Being poor is so expensive
- I hear you. Sometimes I’d like to just buy a simple item without researching as if it’s a major purchase.
