In one of the most bizarre cases involving a foreign talent, an Indian national, Palaniappan Ramanathan, was sentenced to four weeks in jail for trying to bribe a Certis Cisco officer with an offer of $10, just so he could get away with urinating in a public place.
The officer, Hairul Azrin Anual, who was attached to the Jurong East Neighbourhood Police Centre, had spotted Palaniappan urinating against an MRT track pillar at Jurong East MRT station on April 14. The officer and his team mate approached the Indian national, and told him it was an offence to urinate in a public place.
Palaniappan was asked to produce his work permit, but instead of doing so he offered the officer a $10 to be let off. Hairul rejected the bribe and told him it was an offence in Singapore. The matter was reported to CPIB, who subsequently arrested the man.
