I met a girl on instagram and we ended up on a video call where I was not wearing anything. She recorded the whole video call and started to come after me for money. I told her I only had $300 but had no way to pay her, so now she’s threatening to send the recorded video call to my followers on instagram. I also gave her my whatsapp number so after I blocked her on instagram, she messaged me on whatsapp.
I blocked her twice on whatsapp but she apparently has multiple phone numbers and continued to harass me for the money. And then she sent the video to one of my followers’ accounts on Instagram, but I got her to unsend it by promising I’d send the money tomorrow.
I’ve read the guides online on how to prevent extortion but I’m really unsure if blocking her is the best idea at this point.
Here are what netizens think:
- You need to make a police report.
- Police report, like, yesterday. Do not send any money. They will just keep asking for more. If I were you, I would let them know that you’re a minor and a police report has been made, then block them. Keep blocking any new accounts or numbers. On your own, let your friends know you were scammed and not to click on any videos/links sent by strangers.
- If the girl is local, there is still hope after making a police report. But if she is from overseas, you can only hope for the best after. The thing about extortion is once you give money, without a doubt they will continuously ask for more in the long run because they always have a leverage over you. On your end, you can things like (a) Remaking IG completely, (b) Going on a long hiatus, (c) Warning followers about her, (d) Removing all your followers so she can’t contact them etc. However, despite doing any of these methods, the person probably still has some of their contacts so you can contact some of these people to tell them the truth. At least mitigate the situation than let it blow out of proportion completely.
- You seriously still think the person on the other end is a girl?
