A devastating fire swept through Bangkok’s popular Sri Somrat pet market, located within the Chatuchak Weekend Market, in the early hours of the morning, resulting in the tragic loss of thousands of animals. The blaze, which broke out at around 4:10 am, ravaged the 1,400 sqm area, home to 118 pet shops, leaving a trail of destruction and heartbreak in its wake.

The pet market, a beloved destination for tourists and locals alike, was left in ruins, with the bodies of countless animals, including cats, dogs, monkeys, birds, fish, rabbits, snakes, and chickens, strewn among the wreckage. The cries of distressed animals were reportedly heard by witnesses, adding to the horror of the scene.

Fortunately, no human casualties were reported, but the emotional toll on vendors and animal lovers alike is immense. Firefighters responded quickly, extinguishing the flames within 30 minutes, but not before the fire had claimed the lives of thousands of animals.

A video of the scene, posted on YouTube, showed the extent of the destruction, with firefighters battling to contain the blaze as it engulfed market structures and destroyed storefronts. Vendors, who had lost a significant number of animals, including exotic species valued at five to six digits of baht each, were left to survey the damage and mourn the loss of their beloved creatures.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire is believed to have originated from a dog shop, where electric fans were left on overnight to provide comfort to the animals. The exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the devastating consequences are clear.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the district office is working to assess the damage and provide assistance to affected vendors. In a heartening display of solidarity, customers are being urged to support the retailers by purchasing animals from them, helping to alleviate some of the financial burden and emotional distress caused by the disaster.

As the people of Bangkok come to terms with this tragic event, the incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the need for vigilance in ensuring the safety and well-being of all creatures, great and small.
