A tragic road accident occurred in Choa Chu Kang on Saturday, July 20, claiming the life of a 40-year-old van driver. The incident involved a collision between the van and an SMRT bus, leaving three bus passengers injured.
According to eyewitnesses, the van’s front bonnet was severely damaged, and the bus also sustained significant damage. A video shared on social media showed the scene of the accident, with emergency responders from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the Singapore Police Force (SPF) in attendance.
The accident took place near Block 708 Choa Chu Kang North 5, and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) issued an advisory warning road users to avoid the right lane of the road. The SCDF received an alert about the accident at around 12:25 pm and dispatched officers to the scene.
Upon arrival, the officers found the van driver trapped in the vehicle and used hydraulic rescue equipment to extricate him. The driver was conveyed to Woodlands Health, where he unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. The SPF confirmed that the 40-year-old van driver was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Three bus passengers, aged between 13 and 77, were also injured in the accident and were taken to Woodlands Health and National University Hospital for treatment. The police are currently investigating the cause of the accident.
SMRT Buses’ Deputy Managing Director, Mr. Vincent Gay, stated that the bus involved was stationary at the bus stop when the accident occurred. SMRT has reached out to the injured passengers to offer support and assistance. The other passengers were transferred to another bus to continue their journey.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for all road users to exercise caution and vigilance while on the roads.
