Thai Abbot Arrested for $9 Million Embezzlement Linked to Gambling and Personal Relationships
BANGKOK – A significant scandal has emerged within Thailand’s religious community as the former abbot of Wat Rai Khing temple in Nakhon Pathom province has been arrested for allegedly embezzling 300 million baht (approximately $9 million) to fund online gambling activities and support a close female associate.
Details of the Investigation
The abbot, known as Phra Dhammavajiranuvatara or “Chao Khun Yaem,” was taken into custody following a thorough investigation by the Crime Suppression Division (CSD). Police Lieutenant General Jirapop Phuridet announced the findings on May 15, revealing that undercover officers had been monitoring the temple for nearly seven months after receiving reports of financial misconduct.
Investigators uncovered evidence of substantial money transfers from temple accounts to personal accounts, totaling over 100 million baht. The financial trail indicated connections to online baccarat gambling websites, raising serious concerns about the misuse of temple funds.
Charges and Surrender
Following the issuance of a court arrest warrant, the abbot surrendered to authorities at the Central Investigation Bureau in Bangkok on May 15. He provided testimony regarding the allegations and voluntarily disrobed from monkhood that evening. The charges against him include misappropriation of property, neglect of official duties, and dishonesty in performing official responsibilities, as temple abbots are classified as officials under Thai law.
Police Major General Jaroonkiat Pankaew, Deputy Commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, noted that the operation to apprehend the abbot was initially scheduled for May 16, but he surrendered early upon learning of the investigation. Despite his early surrender, the case remains strong, supported by substantial evidence.
Involvement of Associates
The investigation also led to the arrest of Ms. Orawan, believed to be an online gambling broker, who was detained at her condominium in Pattaya. Another suspect, Ms. Aranyawan, was apprehended and confessed to supporting the abbot’s criminal activities. She revealed that she had known Phra Dhammavajiranuvatara since their school days and had borrowed 40 million baht for investment purposes in 2021.
Investigators discovered recorded conversations between the abbot and Ms. Aranyawan discussing debt collections, as well as personal videos on the abbot’s mobile phone, further complicating the case.
Community Impact and Future Actions
The scandal has sent shockwaves through the Thai religious community, raising questions about accountability and the management of temple funds. Authorities are expanding their investigation to include all parties involved and are coordinating with the Supreme Sangha Council for further actions.
As the case unfolds, it highlights the need for greater oversight and transparency within religious institutions to prevent similar incidents in the future. The public and authorities alike are watching closely as the investigation continues, seeking justice and accountability for the misuse of funds intended for community welfare.
