3 Bangladeshi Men Charged in Johor for Involvement in Terror Group Activities

JOHOR BAHRU – Three Bangladeshi nationals suspected of being involved in the propagation of extremist ideologies linked to the Islamic State (IS) terror group have been formally charged in a Johor court.

The trio appeared in court earlier today (7 August), with proceedings held in the morning at approximately 8am. Notably, all three men wore sunglasses with different coloured frames as they were escorted to the courthouse under tight security.

The men face accusations of actively promoting extremist content associated with IS while in Malaysia. Their activities allegedly involved spreading radical views within their community and forming recruitment groups with the aim of indoctrinating others.

36 Individuals Arrested in Wider Counter-Terror Sweep

According to earlier reports, the Malaysian authorities had, in June 2025, conducted a three-phase counter-terrorism operation that led to the arrest of 36 Bangladeshi nationals across Selangor and Johor. These arrests were the result of coordinated intelligence efforts by Malaysian law enforcement agencies.

The three men now charged are believed to be part of that larger network, which authorities say sought to establish covert cells aimed at spreading extremist ideology and radicalising fellow migrants from their home country.

Investigations suggest the group also attempted to solicit funds for terrorist-related activities, with broader objectives including destabilising the government of Bangladesh.

Authorities Warn Against Spread of Extremism in Migrant Communities

Security agencies in Malaysia remain on high alert, particularly when it comes to foreign nationals using the country as a base for extremist activities. Authorities stress that Malaysia will not be used as a safe haven for those seeking to advance terrorist agendas, regardless of nationality.

The case is a reminder of the evolving threat of radicalisation, especially within migrant communities where vulnerable individuals may be targeted for recruitment. The Malaysian government has pledged continued cooperation with international partners to monitor and dismantle such networks.

The suspects remain in custody pending further legal proceedings.
