11 Men to Face Rioting Charges After Toa Payoh Coffee Shop Brawl
A violent clash broke out at a coffee shop in Toa Payoh on 24 August, leaving two men injured and sparking a large-scale police investigation. Eleven men, aged between 21 and 34, are set to be charged in court with rioting while armed with a deadly weapon.
The incident unfolded at Block 10B Lorong 7 Toa Payoh at about 10am, when police received reports of a fight involving multiple individuals. Preliminary investigations revealed that a group of 13 people had allegedly ganged up on two victims following a dispute. Some in the group were armed, and a cleaver believed to have been used in the scuffle was later seized by the authorities.

The victims, aged 21 and 30, suffered stab wounds to the arm and back respectively. Fortunately, both were treated as outpatients at hospital. Police officers from the Tanglin Division and the Criminal Investigation Department worked swiftly, using CCTV and police camera footage to identify those involved, leading to the arrests within hours of the fight.
Court Charges and Possible Sentences
According to the police, four men will be brought to court on 26 August, with the remaining seven to follow the next day. Two others – a 30-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman – are assisting with further investigations but will not face immediate charges.
If convicted of rioting with a deadly weapon, the accused men face a prison term of up to 10 years and caning. The severity of the charge underscores Singapore’s tough stance on violent offences, particularly those committed in public spaces that threaten community safety.
Rising Concerns Over Coffee Shop Violence
This case is the latest in a string of violent incidents at coffee shops across Singapore. Just weeks earlier, fights were reported in Ang Mo Kio and Jurong, also involving groups of young men. The recurrence of such cases has raised public concern about safety in neighbourhood hangouts traditionally seen as family-friendly spaces.
Residents have expressed unease that disputes are escalating into violent brawls, often involving weapons. Law enforcement authorities have stressed that they will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to such behaviour, reinforcing the message that community spaces must remain safe for all.
