CCTV Above Toilet Partition at Malaysian Expressway Rest Stop Sparks Privacy Concerns
A CCTV camera installed near an accessible toilet at a rest stop along Malaysia’s North-South Expressway has sparked public concern after a visitor spotted it above a toilet partition, raising questions over users’ privacy.
The incident took place at the northbound Rawang Rest and Service Area (RSA), where a man shared his experience on social media after accompanying his wife to use the accessible toilet.
According to his post, he was startled to notice a surveillance camera mounted above the partition wall while inside the toilet. Although he did not believe the camera was directly recording the toilet cubicle, its visible placement was enough to make users feel uneasy.
He explained that the camera appeared to be positioned towards the exterior area of the toilet rather than the cubicle itself. However, because there was a large gap above the partition, anyone using the toilet could clearly see the camera overhead, creating the impression that privacy might be compromised.
User Calls for Better Toilet Design
The man urged the rest stop operator to verify the camera’s actual field of view and review the toilet’s layout to prevent similar concerns in future.
He suggested enclosing the open space above the partition walls so users would no longer be able to see surveillance equipment from inside the toilet, reducing the risk of misunderstandings and improving public confidence in the facilities.
His post quickly attracted attention online, with many social media users expressing discomfort over the camera’s placement despite there being no evidence that it was recording inside the toilet cubicle.
PLUS Removes Camera After Complaint
In response, highway concessionaire PLUS Malaysia Berhad said it takes users’ privacy seriously and acted immediately after receiving public feedback.
The company confirmed that it carried out an on-site inspection and removed the camera on July 23 to ensure the privacy of toilet users while maintaining overall safety at the rest area.
PLUS added that it will conduct a comprehensive review of CCTV installations across all of its rest and service areas to ensure surveillance systems comply with both security requirements and privacy standards.
Company Promises Review of CCTV Placement
The company emphasised that the safety, comfort and privacy of visitors remain its top priorities.
It also thanked members of the public for highlighting the issue, saying such feedback helps improve the management and quality of facilities provided at its highway rest stops.
The incident has reignited discussion online about the balance between security surveillance and personal privacy, particularly in locations such as public toilets where users expect a higher level of privacy.
