Police are investigating a hit-and-run incident in Simei after an unlicensed driver allegedly fled the scene of a self-skidding accident in the early hours of Friday morning.
According to authorities, the incident took place along Simei Street 3 at around 12.55am. Officers from the Singapore Police Force and the Singapore Civil Defence Force were alerted shortly after the accident occurred.
Preliminary findings indicate that the car is believed to have skidded on its own. However, by the time officers arrived at the location, the driver was no longer present, raising immediate concerns about potential traffic violations and road safety breaches.
Passenger Sustains Minor Injuries, Refuses Hospitalisation
A 21-year-old female passenger was in the vehicle at the time of the accident. She suffered minor injuries and was assessed at the scene by paramedics. After evaluation, she declined conveyance to hospital.
While no serious injuries were reported, the incident has sparked renewed attention on vehicle insurance claims and personal injury liability in road traffic accidents. Motorists involved in such cases may face significant financial and legal consequences, particularly if insurance coverage is compromised by unlawful actions.
Police later arrested a 21-year-old man who had allegedly allowed the unlicensed individual to drive the vehicle. Under Singapore law, permitting someone without a valid driving licence to operate a motor vehicle is a serious offence.
Driver Still At Large As Investigations Continue
Efforts are currently underway to locate the driver who left the scene. Failing to remain at an accident site without valid reason may amount to an additional offence under traffic regulations.
If convicted of driving without a valid licence or allowing another person to do so, an offender may face a fine of up to S$10,000, imprisonment of up to three years, or both. Such penalties reflect Singapore’s strict stance on road safety compliance and responsible vehicle ownership.
Investigations remain ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the case. Motorists are reminded to ensure that anyone driving their vehicle holds a valid licence and proper motor insurance coverage to avoid severe legal and financial repercussions.
