A 50-year-old Chinese national is set to face charges in Singapore after allegedly stealing cash and bank cards from a fellow passenger during an international flight. The incident reportedly occurred on a flight travelling from Singapore to Jakarta, raising fresh concerns about theft during air travel and the importance of passenger vigilance.
Authorities said the alleged crime involved S$750 in cash and three bank cards taken from a passenger’s wallet. The situation was quickly detected thanks to the alertness of a cabin crew member, whose actions later earned official recognition from the police.
The case has highlighted how attentive airline staff and travellers can help prevent in-flight crimes, especially when valuables are stored in overhead compartments.
Suspicious Behaviour Spotted During Flight
According to investigators, the incident occurred on October 2, 2025. Police were alerted to a suspected theft at approximately 6:20pm after suspicious activity was noticed onboard the aircraft.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect had left his assigned seat and walked several rows forward inside the cabin. He allegedly removed a passenger’s bag from the overhead compartment before returning to his own seat.
The man then reportedly opened the bag and searched through the contents. During this time, he is believed to have taken S$750 in cash along with three bank cards from the victim’s wallet. After taking the items, he allegedly placed the bag back into the overhead storage area to avoid drawing attention.
However, the alleged attempt to conceal the act did not go unnoticed.
A vigilant cabin crew member observed the unusual behaviour and quickly alerted the passenger whose bag had been handled. Upon checking his belongings, the victim realised the money and bank cards were missing.
Cabin Crew Intervention Leads To Arrest
Following the discovery, cabin crew members informed the flight captain about the suspected theft. The captain subsequently reported the matter to authorities in Indonesia, where the plane was scheduled to land.
Before the aircraft arrived in Jakarta, the missing cash and cards were recovered and returned to the victim. Indonesian authorities then denied entry to the suspect and arranged for him to be sent back to Singapore.
Upon arrival at Singapore’s airport, officers from the Airport Police Division arrested the man. Police also seized foreign currencies and several mobile phones believed to be linked to the investigation, which will be used as evidence in court.
The man is scheduled to be formally charged with theft under Section 379 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 3(1) of the Tokyo Convention Act.
Cabin Crew Member Receives Public Spiritedness Award
In recognition of his attentiveness, the cabin crew member who spotted the suspicious activity was presented with the Public Spiritedness Award by the police. The award acknowledged his quick action in reporting the behaviour, which helped authorities recover the stolen items and identify the suspect.
Senior officers commended the crew member’s vigilance, emphasising that airline staff and passengers play an important role in ensuring safety during flights.
Police also used the case to remind travellers to remain cautious when storing valuables during flights. Passengers are advised to keep cash, credit cards, and other important items with them rather than placing them inside overhead compartments.
Authorities also encouraged travellers to watch for suspicious behaviour, such as passengers opening overhead bins and rummaging through bags that do not belong to them. Any unusual activity should be reported immediately to cabin crew so that appropriate action can be taken.
If convicted, the accused could face a jail term of up to three years, a fine, or both under Singapore law.
