We have little resources, and so everything is expensive. If you want to lead a good (more luxurious) life, you have to have a good job. A really good job.
You grow up being told these: work hard, get into a good secondary school, get into a good university and get a good job, or your life is ruined for eternity.
We work the longest hours. In 2016, Singaporeans clocked 2371.2 hours, the longest in the world.
We also have among the oldest workers. Guess what’s the result of lack of minimum wage and high cost of living?
Corporal punishment. From your parents. I’m not sure if this is still very common now, but coming home to a beating definitely does nothelp relieve your stress. Didn’t score an A? Prepare to flinch in preparation for that slap.
There also isn’t much you can do to relieve your stress. Our best bets are the manmade nature and the slightly dirty East Coast Park. Oh, and unless you’re heading there on a weekday afternoon, don’t forget the 500 other people wandering and clamoring around you!
Welcome to Singapore!
Sincerely,
A Local Unsatisfiable Complainer
Disclaimer: For all that we complain about, we still love Singapore!
