18 Y.O PRC JAILED 6 WEEKS AFTER AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOUR ON AIRPORT POLICE

An 18-year-old traveller has been sentenced to jail after an incident at Singapore’s airport escalated into violence against a police officer, highlighting the strict stance authorities take on offences involving public servants.

The teenager, identified as Fan Guangyao, received a six-week jail term after he became aggressive at the Airport Police Division and physically lashed out during an attempted de-escalation.

The case underscores how quickly routine situations can spiral into criminal offences, particularly in high-security locations such as Changi Airport.

Situation Escalates After Lost Passport Report

The incident began late at night when the teenager approached officers to report that he had misplaced both his passport and wallet within the airport premises.

Officers advised him to contact the Chinese embassy to arrange for a replacement passport—standard protocol in such situations. However, instead of complying, the teenager became visibly agitated.

According to police statements, he started shouting at officers and refused repeated requests to calm down. Despite attempts to manage the situation verbally, his behaviour continued to escalate.

Airport environments are tightly regulated due to security concerns, and disruptive conduct can quickly draw intervention from enforcement officers.

Physical Confrontation Leads To Injury

In an effort to defuse the situation, an officer placed a hand on the teenager’s shoulder—a common approach used to calm distressed individuals. However, the gesture was met with resistance.

The teenager reacted by slamming his hand on the table and pushing the officer’s hand away. Even after multiple attempts to calm him, he remained uncooperative.

When officers attempted to restrain him, the situation turned physical. During the scuffle, he scratched an officer’s hand, causing several superficial injuries.

He was subsequently arrested at the scene.

Court Hands Down Jail Sentence

Fan was charged under Section 353 of the Penal Code, which relates to using criminal force to deter a public servant from carrying out their duties.

He was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment, with additional charges—including disorderly behaviour—taken into consideration during sentencing.

The offence is treated seriously under Singapore law, particularly when it involves frontline officers performing their duties in sensitive locations such as airports.

Authorities Reiterate Zero Tolerance

The Singapore Police Force reiterated that it adopts a firm stance against any form of aggression towards public servants.

In its statement, the police emphasised that such actions will not be tolerated and offenders will face strict legal consequences.

Travellers were also reminded to remain cooperative and comply with instructions from both airport staff and law enforcement officers.

Incidents like this serve as a cautionary reminder that losing composure in high-pressure situations can lead to severe legal repercussions—especially in Singapore, where laws governing public order and safety are rigorously enforced.
