Friendster Returns In 2026 With ‘No Ads, No Algorithms’ Social Media Approach

More than a decade after disappearing from the internet, Friendster has officially returned with a completely different vision for social media.

The once-popular social networking platform has relaunched as a mobile application focused on real-life friendships, offline interaction and privacy-focused networking instead of algorithm-driven feeds and viral content.

The revamped app, currently available free on Apple’s iOS App Store, was relaunched in April 2026 by entrepreneur Mike Carson.

Unlike mainstream social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, the new Friendster promises users “no ads, no algorithms, no spam” and no selling of personal user data.

Users Must Physically Meet To Add Friends

One of the app’s most unusual features is how users connect with one another.

Instead of receiving endless friend suggestions from strangers or influencers, Friendster requires users to physically meet and tap their phones together in order to become friends on the platform.

According to reports, users standing near each other with the app open may also connect without physically tapping devices.

The redesigned platform does not import any old Friendster accounts or historical data from the original version of the website, meaning former users will not be able to recover previous profiles, photos or friend lists.

In a public blog post, Carson explained that he acquired the expired Friendster brand and domain rights between 2023 and 2025 before rebuilding the platform from scratch.

He said the idea behind the app was to encourage more authentic social interaction in an era increasingly dominated by addictive scrolling and algorithm-driven content.

Friendster Climbs App Store Rankings

The nostalgia-driven relaunch appears to have generated strong early curiosity.

As of May 1, 2026, Friendster reportedly climbed to the No. 2 spot in Apple’s App Store Free Apps category.

At present, the application is only available on iOS devices, with no official confirmation yet regarding an Android release.

Additional features are reportedly being developed, including the ability to view mutual friends and send messaging requests through social circles.

Carson said the long-term goal is to create a platform that motivates users to meet physically rather than remain trapped in endless online engagement loops.

Experts Say Timing Of Relaunch May Benefit Friendster

The return of Friendster comes amid growing criticism worldwide over social media addiction, mental health concerns and invasive data collection practices.

Researchers have increasingly linked excessive social media consumption — especially heavily algorithm-driven content — to declining mental wellbeing among younger users.

Associate Professor Saifuddin Ahmed from Nanyang Technological University reportedly said the relaunch was “cleverly timed” given growing frustration towards modern social media platforms.

He noted that many users are becoming increasingly tired of aggressive algorithms, excessive advertising and constant influencer-driven content.

However, he also questioned whether users accustomed to endless scrolling and instant entertainment would be willing to adopt a platform centred around genuine human interaction and effort.

Originally launched in 2003, Friendster was widely regarded as one of the world’s earliest mainstream social networking platforms before eventually shutting down in 2015 amid competition from rivals such as Facebook and MySpace.

Its unexpected revival now places it back into a social media landscape very different from the one it first helped create.
