My friend Gerald is the prime example of “No Brain, All Flex” and it’s actually damn sad
Eh guys, I need to vent. I have this friend, let’s call him Gerald. This guy is the definition of “pattern more than badminton.” Since our early 20s, he always had this logic that if he got a car, the girls would automatically come flocking.
So what did this genius do? Instead of saving up or investing in himself, he went and took a high-interest loan for a second-hand Continental car just to hao lian (show off). Now, we’re hitting our mid-30s. Everyone else is busy worrying about BTO, CPF shielding, or at least having an emergency fund. Gerald? His wallet is literally zero.
Every time we meet for kopi, it’s the same story. He’s drowning in debt, but still want to act like a high-SES big shot. He loves to gamble—thinks he’s the God of Gamblers at MBS—and when he loses, he goes to the pub to drink away his sorrows. Then he complains he got no money. KNN, you think the money will fall from the sky meh?
The worst part is he has zero common sense. He lives paycheck to paycheck, paying off the car interest and credit card bills, then wonders why he’s still single. Hello? Girls nowadays are smart leh. They see you driving a BMW but eating grass for dinner, they will run far-far also.
But the real “black mirror” moment for me was realizing… Gerald is not an outlier. I look around and I see so many Singaporeans exactly like him. Living on borrowed time and borrowed money just to keep up appearances. Everything also must “face,” but behind the scenes, the bank account is crying.
Seriously, mid-30s already, still want to play this kind of game. If you have no savings and you’re still prioritizing “image” over stability, you’re just digging your own grave. Wake up leh! Car cannot help you BTO, and car definitely cannot pay for your retirement.
TL;DR: Friend is broke, in debt, and still gambles because he thinks “car = girls.” Realized many Singaporeans are also trapped in this fake “lifestyles of the rich and famous” bubble. Sian.
