TAIWAN CELEB NONO WALKS FREE FROM SEXUAL ASSAULT CASE, “LACK OF EVIDENCE”

Taiwanese Celebrity NONO Acquitted In Sexual Assault Case After Court Cites Lack Of Evidence

Taiwanese entertainer NONO has been acquitted by a Taiwanese court after facing allegations of sexual assault and molestation involving multiple women.

The high-profile case had attracted major public attention amid Taiwan’s wider MeToo movement, with prosecutors previously accusing the television personality, whose real name is Chen Hsuan-yu, of committing offences during separate incidents involving massage premises and inside a private vehicle.

According to Taiwanese media reports, the Shilin District Court ruled that the evidence presented during the trial was insufficient to secure a criminal conviction.

The court reportedly stressed that criminal proceedings must follow the principles of “presumption of innocence” and “judgment based on evidence”, adding that accusations alone were not enough to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

Court Says Testimony Alone Was Insufficient

One complainant alleged that NONO assaulted her at a massage establishment in Taipei, claiming he used his physical strength to overpower her.

Another woman accused him of molesting her inside a vehicle after they allegedly met through social media conversations.

The women reportedly came forward years after the alleged incidents during Taiwan’s MeToo wave, saying they were encouraged by other victims speaking publicly about their experiences.

However, the court stated that both cases relied mainly on the complainants’ individual testimonies without sufficient supporting evidence such as witnesses, recordings, or physical proof.

Judges noted that the incidents allegedly took place many years ago, making evidence collection and factual reconstruction significantly more difficult.

The ruling stated that the prosecution had not met the criminal law threshold required to eliminate reasonable doubt.

Judge’s Remarks Spark Heated Public Debate

The written judgment has since gone viral online after several strongly worded legal phrases were circulated across Taiwanese social media platforms.

One passage reportedly stated that “the purpose of law is not revenge, but fairness and justice,” while another stressed that public suspicion and intense opinion could not replace concrete legal evidence.

The acquittal has divided public opinion in Taiwan, with some supporting the court’s strict adherence to legal standards while others questioned whether historical sexual assault cases face unfair evidentiary barriers.

Legal analysts said the case highlights the broader challenges often faced in delayed sexual offence complaints, particularly where physical evidence is no longer available years after the alleged incidents.

Case May Still Be Appealed

Although NONO was acquitted at the first-instance court level, prosecutors are reportedly expected to review the judgment and may file an appeal.

The celebrity’s public image has already suffered substantial damage since the allegations first emerged, with the controversy becoming one of Taiwan’s most widely discussed entertainment scandals linked to the MeToo movement.

The outcome of any future appeal proceedings could become a closely watched legal battle involving issues surrounding evidence standards, victim testimony, media influence, and judicial fairness in high-profile sexual misconduct cases.
