A 26-year-old Malaysian man who had been working multiple jobs to save up for his upcoming wedding is now battling for his life after an alleged drunk-driving accident in Klang, Selangor.
According to reports, Zulfiqar Zamir Amirul Nizam was riding his motorcycle shortly after midnight on May 13 when a car allegedly travelling against the flow of traffic slammed into him. The devastating collision has since left him in critical condition in the intensive care unit (ICU).
His story has sparked outrage online across Malaysia and Singapore, with many calling for tougher punishments against drunk drivers.
Mother Says Son Did “Nothing Wrong”
Zulfiqar’s mother, Hamidah Othman, said her son had been riding on the correct side of the road and was simply trying to complete his final delivery job before heading home.
Speaking to local media, she stressed that her son had done nothing wrong and demanded justice for him and for future road users.
The 26-year-old reportedly worked full-time as a service adviser while also taking on part-time food and parcel delivery jobs during his free time to earn extra income for his wedding preparations.
His wedding reception had reportedly been planned for December in Pasir Gudang.
According to his mother, Zulfiqar only accepted delivery jobs when he felt physically capable after work, showing how determined he was to secure a stable financial future before marriage.
Driver Allegedly Travelled 3.5km Against Traffic
Police investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly drove approximately 3.5km against the flow of traffic before crashing into Zulfiqar’s motorcycle.
Authorities also alleged the driver was speeding at the time of the accident.
The impact reportedly caused severe injuries, including a fractured arm and a broken back. Zulfiqar has since undergone surgery and remains under close observation in hospital.
The case has reignited public concerns over reckless driving, road safety, and the dangers of drink-driving incidents in Malaysia and Singapore.
Alcohol Level Allegedly Nearly Four Times Legal Limit
A 35-year-old man has since been charged in connection with the crash.
According to reports, authorities allegedly found 196mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood in his system. Malaysia’s legal limit is reportedly 50mg per 100ml.
The accused has reportedly claimed trial to charges involving driving under the influence of alcohol and causing grievous injury.
The case remains ongoing.
Many social media users expressed sympathy for Zulfiqar and his family, especially after learning he had been working extra delivery shifts simply to build savings for his future wife and wedding plans.
Others also pointed out the growing risks faced by gig economy workers such as food delivery riders and parcel couriers, who spend long hours on the road late at night to earn additional income amid rising living costs.
The incident has once again triggered discussions about stricter enforcement against drunk driving and whether current penalties are severe enough to deter offenders from endangering innocent lives.
