M’SIA BOAST PASSPORT PRODUCTION SPEED: READY IN 1 HOUR, WHILE SG TAKES DAYS

Malaysia Says Its Passport Processing Is Among The Fastest In The World

Malaysia has claimed to be among the countries with the world’s fastest passport processing times, with some applications reportedly completed in as little as one hour.

The claim was highlighted by the Immigration Department of Malaysia in a recent social media post showcasing the country’s progress in modernising its passport application system over the decades.

Besides fast processing times, Malaysia’s passport also continues to rank among the most powerful globally, giving its holders access to hundreds of destinations without requiring a prior visa.

Passport Processing Reduced From Weeks To One Hour

According to an infographic shared by Malaysian immigration authorities, passport applications between the 1960s and 1980s were handled fully manually and could take between two to four weeks to complete.

By the 1990s, improvements in administrative systems reduced waiting times to around seven to 14 days.

The introduction of biometric passports between 1998 and 2009 further shortened processing durations to roughly one to three days.

Authorities said a major breakthrough came on 1 Feb 2007, when the immigration office at Wangsa Maju successfully introduced a one-hour passport processing service.

Since 2009, the service has reportedly been expanded nationwide across Malaysia.

However, the department clarified that the “as early as one hour” timeline may still vary depending on factors such as application type, supporting documents, branch workload, and whether additional verification checks are required.

Malaysia Compares Favourably Against Other Countries

The infographic also compared Malaysia’s passport processing efficiency with several other countries.

According to the figures shared, passport renewals in Singapore generally take around three to seven working days.

Meanwhile, the waiting period reportedly stretches significantly longer elsewhere, including:

  • United Kingdom: Three to 10 weeks
  • United States: Six to 10 weeks
  • Australia: Around six weeks
  • India: Two to six weeks
  • Canada: 10 to 20 working days

The comparison quickly attracted attention online, with many Malaysians praising the convenience of being able to secure passport renewals within hours, especially before urgent travel plans.

Malaysian Passport Ranked Among World’s Strongest

Apart from processing speed, Malaysia’s passport continues to perform strongly in international rankings.

According to the 2026 Henley & Partners Passport Index, Malaysia ranks sixth globally alongside Hungary, Poland, and the United Kingdom, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 183 destinations.

Singapore currently holds the top position globally, with access to 192 destinations without requiring a prior visa.

Meanwhile, the Passport Index by Arton Capital ranked the Malaysian passport even higher, placing it third globally based on mobility scores.

The latest recognition has been viewed by many Malaysians as a small but meaningful point of national pride, especially given the efficiency improvements made over the past two decades.
