Thai police have arrested a 33-year-old Indian national in Koh Phangan after he allegedly posted videos of himself handling firearms and offering illegal party substances through a so-called “menu” system on social media.
According to authorities from Thailand’s Provincial Police Region 8, the operation was launched after videos surfaced online showing foreign nationals firing rifles and handguns at shooting targets. The clips quickly drew public attention and prompted an investigation into possible illegal activities linked to the island’s nightlife scene.
Police later identified the suspect as Shabeel Kunnon Valapil, who was reportedly staying in Thailand on an overstayed visa. Officers raided his residence in Surat Thani province on May 23 after receiving multiple complaints from residents in the Ban Tai area about a foreigner allegedly involved in suspicious activities and frequently discharging firearms near his home.
Suspect Tried To Escape During Raid
When officers arrived at the property, they found several houses within the compound. Residents reportedly informed police that the suspect was not at home at the time.
Shortly after, officers heard a dirt bike approaching and took cover before revealing themselves once the man arrived. Authorities said the suspect attempted to flee immediately after spotting police but was eventually detained on the spot.
During the search, officers allegedly discovered several packets containing illegal substances, along with tools believed to be used for packaging and handling them. Police also claimed they uncovered evidence suggesting the substances were intended for distribution around Koh Phangan and Koh Samui party circles.
Investigators later searched the suspect’s mobile phone and allegedly found photographs showing lists of substances alongside pricing details, resembling a digital sales catalogue.
Firearms Photos & Shooting Practice Evidence Found
Authorities also claimed the man frequently showed off firearms online, posting images and videos of himself holding pistols and rifles. Police reportedly found spent bullet casings and shooting targets around the property, suggesting firearms practice had taken place nearby.
Another Thai man, identified as Apidech Kongman, was also arrested during the operation. He allegedly possessed a firearm and additional illegal substances.
The arrests were part of a wider crackdown targeting foreigners allegedly operating unlawful businesses in Koh Phangan using Thai nominees. Thai police said the investigation is still ongoing as officers continue examining possible links to nightlife and party-related activities on the island.
Both suspects were handed over to Koh Phangan Police Station for further investigations and legal proceedings.
