A Hong Kong secondary school principal who was caught on video arguing with security personnel during a school trip in Singapore has stepped down from his position and issued an emotional public apology.
The incident, which took place near SAFRA Jurong, drew widespread attention after footage circulated online showing the principal using vulgar language during a heated confrontation with security officers. The video quickly sparked criticism from both Singaporean and Hong Kong netizens, with many questioning whether the conduct was appropriate for an educator.
Following days of public scrutiny and internal discussions, the principal, Lee Cheuk Hing, announced his resignation and accepted responsibility for his actions.
LEE ADMITS HE FAILED TO SET A GOOD EXAMPLE
In a video interview released by a Hong Kong media outlet, Lee apologised publicly for the incident. During the recording, he bowed to viewers and appeared visibly emotional, wiping away tears as he addressed the controversy.
Lee acknowledged that his behaviour fell short of the standards expected of someone in his position. He said that regardless of the circumstances surrounding the dispute, he should have remained calm and exercised restraint.
According to his statement, he recognised that school leaders are expected to demonstrate professionalism and composure, especially when facing challenging situations. He admitted that he failed to meet those expectations during the confrontation in Singapore.
The former principal also apologised to members of the public, school stakeholders and those who were disappointed by his actions.
INVESTIGATIONS STILL UNDERWAY
Lee said he intends to cooperate fully with any ongoing inquiries conducted by education authorities or other relevant bodies.
The controversy had already led to disciplinary action before his resignation. Reports from Hong Kong indicated that school management had reviewed the matter after hearing accounts from staff members who accompanied the overseas trip.
The case attracted significant attention because the incident involved a group of students travelling abroad under the supervision of school personnel.
Many observers argued that educators, particularly school leaders, are expected to demonstrate behaviour that reflects the values they teach students.
MESSAGE TO STUDENTS
In his apology, Lee directed a personal message to his students, urging them not to follow his example.
He encouraged young people to remain calm during disagreements and to resolve conflicts through rational discussion rather than emotional reactions.
The message appeared aimed at reinforcing the lessons he believes students should take away from the incident, despite the controversy surrounding his own conduct.
The Singapore bus dispute has since become a widely discussed topic across both Hong Kong and Singapore, with many viewing the resignation as an acknowledgment of accountability and the importance of leadership standards in education.
While the incident has effectively brought an end to Lee’s tenure as principal, discussions surrounding professional conduct, public responsibility and the example set by educators are likely to continue long after the controversy fades from public attention.
