Thailand Tourists Warned To Carry Cash As Immigration Spot Checks Reportedly Increase

Travellers heading to Thailand are being reminded to carry sufficient cash after reports surfaced online claiming that immigration officers have stepped up checks on arriving tourists.

According to a post shared by Taiwanese media outlet Formosa News, some visitors were allegedly denied entry after failing to show proof that they carried the required amount of funds upon arrival.

Under long-standing Thai immigration rules, foreign visitors may be asked to show proof of financial means, which reportedly includes carrying cash equivalent to 20,000 baht (around S$740) per person.

While the regulation is not new, travel agencies and online users claim enforcement has recently become stricter amid concerns about foreigners entering Thailand for illegal work.

Tourists Say Cashless Travel Habits Could Become Problem

The discussion quickly gained traction online, especially among younger travellers who rely heavily on credit cards, mobile payments and digital banking while overseas.

Some commenters argued that carrying cash remains important for emergencies and immigration checks, even in an increasingly cashless world.

One user wrote: “As a seasoned traveller I will bring both card and cash. Just in case the card is not accepted or cannot work.”

Others pointed out that not all tourists travel with large amounts of physical cash anymore, especially with mobile wallets and digital banking becoming common across Asia.

Several netizens also questioned whether travellers would even be allowed to withdraw money from ATMs if stopped at immigration checkpoints.

Netizens Divided Over Thailand’s Enforcement

Online reactions were mixed, with some defending Thailand’s stricter enforcement while others complained it could discourage tourism.

One commenter said: “Nobody is forcing you to go to Thailand,” while another claimed the country was becoming less tourist-friendly due to tighter visa rules and possible insurance requirements.

Others believed the spot checks may only target selected travellers rather than every tourist arriving in the country.

Some users also joked about the situation, with humorous comments about tourists being forced to carry cash for nightlife spending and emergency situations.

Despite the viral discussions, Thai authorities have not announced any major changes to the financial proof requirement itself.

Travellers heading to Thailand are still advised to prepare supporting documents such as hotel bookings, return tickets, bank statements and emergency cash to avoid potential issues during immigration clearance.
