2 Sisters, 13 & 15, Die In Johor House Fire After Window Grilles Trap Them Inside

Two teenage sisters lost their lives after a devastating fire swept through their family home in Johor Bahru, with investigators believing metal window grilles may have prevented them from escaping.

The victims, identified as 15-year-old Huang Yujie and her 13-year-old sister Huang Yuning, were found unconscious in an upstairs bedroom of a two-storey terrace house in Taman Ehsan Jaya on the night of June 2.

According to reports, the blaze broke out at around 9pm and rapidly engulfed large sections of the residence. The sisters were trapped on the upper floor as thick smoke filled the home.

Authorities believe the pair may have attempted to flee through the bedroom windows but were unable to do so because of fixed metal grilles installed for security purposes. As the fire intensified, they allegedly inhaled large amounts of smoke and lost consciousness before rescuers could reach them.

Firefighters Arrived Within Six Minutes

Senior Fire Officer I Rafie Ahmad Sareng, who led the operation from the Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue Station, said emergency crews received a distress call at approximately 9:06pm.

Firefighters arrived at the scene just six minutes later, only to find the blaze already well-developed.

By the time rescue teams reached the property, around 60 per cent of the two-storey terrace house had been destroyed by the flames.

During a search-and-rescue operation, firefighters discovered the two sisters unconscious inside an upstairs bedroom. Emergency Medical Rescue Services personnel immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) at the scene before both victims were transported to hospital.

Despite their efforts, the girls later succumbed to their injuries.

Investigation Into Cause Of Fire Ongoing

A total of 14 firefighters were deployed to tackle the blaze, with additional assistance provided by neighbouring fire stations.

Authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, and investigations remain ongoing.

The tragedy has once again raised concerns about the use of fixed window grilles in residential properties. While such grilles are commonly installed to deter break-ins and improve home security, safety experts have long warned that they can become deadly obstacles during emergencies if no quick-release mechanism is available.

Fire safety advocates have repeatedly encouraged homeowners to ensure at least one grille in each room can be opened from the inside, allowing occupants an alternative escape route should stairways or doors become inaccessible during a fire.

The deaths of the two sisters have sparked an outpouring of condolences online, with many expressing heartbreak over the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and calling for greater awareness of residential fire safety measures.
