A 41-year-old woman narrowly escaped serious injury after her car overturned inside a multi-storey car park in Woodlands while she was driving her two children to a tuition class.
The incident occurred at around 6:50pm on June 2 at Block 622A Woodlands Drive 52. The accident left many residents shocked, with photos of the overturned vehicle quickly circulating online and sparking discussion about how such an accident could happen within the confines of a car park.
According to reports, the vehicle overturned near the exit ramp of the car park. The damaged car eventually came to rest upside down on a sloping section near the exit barrier, causing significant disruption to motorists attempting to leave the premises.
Children Escaped Unhurt and Continued Journey by Bus
The driver later revealed that she had been ferrying her two primary school-aged children to a tuition session when the accident occurred.
She explained that she lost control of the vehicle while attempting to exit the car park. The car reportedly accelerated down the ramp before overturning.
Despite the dramatic scene, both the woman and her children managed to climb out of the vehicle without suffering major injuries.
“Fortunately, my children and I were not seriously hurt,” she said.
After escaping from the overturned vehicle, the children continued their journey to tuition by taking a public bus, while their mother remained at the scene to assist authorities and recovery personnel.
Newly Qualified Driver
The woman disclosed that she had obtained her driving licence only three months ago.
Photographs from the scene showed a yellow probation plate (P-plate) displayed on the front windscreen of the vehicle. Under Singapore regulations, newly licensed drivers are required to display P-plates on both the front and rear of their vehicles for a period of 12 months.
The car itself reportedly belonged to her husband.
The accident left visible damage along the ramp area, with scratches observed on the walls leading from the ground floor towards the upper parking decks. The vehicle also sustained extensive damage, including shattered windows, dented doors and a damaged bonnet.
Exit Blocked for More Than Three Hours
The overturned vehicle blocked access to the car park exit for over three hours while recovery operations were carried out.
Motorists were forced to use alternative routes as police officers directed traffic away from the affected exit.
The damaged vehicle was eventually removed from the scene at approximately 10pm. Even after the towing operation was completed, the exit remained temporarily closed while authorities assessed the area.
The Singapore Police Force confirmed that the driver sustained injuries during the accident but declined medical conveyance to hospital.
Investigations into the incident are currently ongoing.
The unusual accident has generated significant attention online, with many Singaporeans expressing relief that the driver and her children escaped without serious harm despite the dramatic rollover. Others have highlighted the challenges faced by new drivers and the importance of exercising caution, especially when navigating ramps and confined spaces within multi-storey car parks.
