Hong Kong Principal Fired After Singapore Bus Dispute
A Hong Kong secondary school principal who became the centre of controversy following a public altercation on a tour bus in Singapore has officially been dismissed from his position.
Lee Cheuk Hing, principal of a Hong Kong school, was previously reported to have submitted his resignation after the incident attracted widespread criticism online. He had also issued an emotional public apology, expressing regret over his behaviour during the dispute.
However, the school’s management committee has now decided not to accept his resignation. Instead, Lee’s employment has been terminated with immediate effect.
The decision means Lee will leave the school earlier than planned. In his resignation letter, he had reportedly requested to remain in the role until Aug. 31.
School Says Principal’s Continued Presence Would Affect Operations
According to reports from Hong Kong media, the school’s management committee said allowing Lee to continue serving as principal would seriously affect the institution’s operations and make it difficult for teachers and students to move on from the controversy.
The committee also criticised Lee’s conduct during the incident, describing his actions as inappropriate and inconsistent with the professional standards expected of educators.
The statement reportedly highlighted what it described as “vulgar” behaviour, adding that such actions breached guidelines governing teaching staff.
The school’s leadership concluded that immediate dismissal was necessary to protect the interests of students, staff and the wider school community.
Incident Sparked Public Backlash
The controversy began after footage of a dispute involving Lee aboard a bus in Singapore circulated online, drawing significant public attention in both Singapore and Hong Kong.
The incident quickly became a talking point on social media, with many questioning whether a school leader should remain in office after becoming involved in such a public confrontation.
Following the backlash, Lee issued a tearful apology and announced his intention to step down. At the time, it appeared he would remain in the role until the end of August to facilitate a transition.
The school’s latest decision has now brought the matter to an abrupt end, with the management committee opting for dismissal rather than allowing the resignation process to proceed.
