Woman Dies After SUV Crashes Into Highway Divider On LPT2 While Returning From Family Event
A family trip home turned tragic after a woman lost her life following a serious accident involving a sport utility vehicle (SUV) along Malaysia’s East Coast Expressway 2 (LPT2).
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 5.15pm on 5 June near Kilometre 341.5 of the highway, close to the Paka Rest and Service Area in Terengganu.
The victim was travelling with four family members after attending a wedding ceremony in Kuala Terengganu when the accident happened.
Authorities said the family was returning to their home in Kuantan, Pahang, at the time of the incident.
SUV Believed To Have Lost Control
According to police, the family was travelling in a Proton X70 SUV when the vehicle reportedly lost control while approaching the accident location.
The SUV subsequently skidded before crashing into the central highway divider.
The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle and resulted in serious injuries to one of the passengers.
Photos circulating online showed the damaged SUV resting near the divider as emergency responders attended to the victims.
Victim Succumbed To Injuries In Hospital
Emergency personnel rushed the injured woman to Hospital Dungun for treatment following the collision.
Despite efforts by medical staff, she later succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital’s intensive care unit.
The victim’s death has left family members and loved ones grieving following what was meant to be a routine journey home after a family gathering.
No information has been released regarding the condition of the other occupants involved in the crash.
Police Investigating Cause Of Crash
Acting Dungun district police chief Deputy Superintendent Jumaidy Bah Chong Weh said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Preliminary findings have not ruled out the possibility that driver fatigue may have played a role in the collision.
Police are examining whether the driver may have briefly fallen asleep before the vehicle lost control.
Road safety experts have frequently highlighted fatigue as a major risk factor for long-distance highway travel, particularly during return journeys after family events, weddings, and holiday gatherings.
Authorities continue to remind motorists to take regular breaks, avoid driving when tired, and stop at designated rest areas if they begin feeling drowsy.
The case remains under investigation.
