The teenager had previously been remanded by Malaysian authorities following the incident, which sparked widespread public outrage due to the number of fatalities involved.

His remand was recently extended by two days to facilitate further investigations before expiring on Jun. 10.

According to local reports, prosecutors have since directed that the suspect be released on bail pending the completion of investigations.

Fatal Crash Claimed Five Lives

The crash occurred on Jun. 1 along the Kluang–Simpang Renggam highway in Johor.

Authorities believe the teenager was driving a Mercedes-Benz while his 22-year-old brother was behind the wheel of a BMW travelling alongside him.

Investigators suspect both vehicles were being driven in a dangerous manner before tragedy struck.

The BMW reportedly lost control, crossed into the opposite lane and crashed into four other vehicles before plunging into a ravine.

The collision resulted in the deaths of five people.

Among those killed were the BMW driver and four members of a family aged between 10 and 73 years old.

Public Outrage Following Incident

News of the crash generated significant backlash on social media, with many Malaysians questioning the circumstances that led to the fatal accident.

The case also drew the attention of Malaysian Transport Minister Anthony Loke, who reportedly described the alleged driving behaviour as irresponsible and unacceptable.

Many members of the public have since called for stricter enforcement against reckless driving, particularly among young motorists operating high-powered vehicles.

Investigations Ongoing

Police have yet to conclude their investigations and the case remains under active review.

The teenager’s release on bail does not indicate the conclusion of legal proceedings, as authorities continue gathering evidence and reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash.

If eventually convicted of the offence being investigated, the suspect could face a jail sentence of up to five years, a fine of up to RM15,000 (approximately S$4,800), or both.

The case continues to attract public attention as families affected by the tragedy await the outcome of the investigation.

Malaysia has seen several high-profile fatal road accidents in recent years, prompting renewed discussions about road safety, speeding, reckless driving and the responsibilities that come with operating performance vehicles on public roads.
