The pair reportedly returned to China less than 48 hours after landing, following the frightening incident near Mexico City’s international airport.

According to Chinese media reports, the victims arrived in Mexico on Wednesday evening to watch the World Cup matches being co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada.

However, their trip quickly turned into a nightmare.

Armed Men Targeted Tourists Near Airport

The two men, identified only by their surnames Wang and Li, were travelling in a car after leaving Mexico City International Airport when they were intercepted by two masked men on motorcycles.

The suspects allegedly pointed guns at them and stole several valuables.

One victim reportedly lost his watch, while the other had almost all of his belongings taken, including his passport.

Speaking to Chinese state media, one of the victims said he was overwhelmed by fear during the robbery.

“My mind went blank at the time. My only thought was our personal safety,” he said.

After reaching their hotel safely, the pair contacted local police as well as China’s 24-hour consular protection hotline for assistance.

One Suspect Arrested

The Chinese embassy in Mexico said it immediately assisted the victims by issuing replacement travel documents and coordinating with local authorities.

Embassy officials also raised concerns with Mexico’s foreign ministry and prosecutors, urging them to thoroughly investigate the case and strengthen protection for Chinese citizens visiting the country.

Mexican authorities later informed the embassy that one suspect had been arrested.

Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have not announced whether the stolen items have been recovered.

Security Heightened For World Cup Visitors

Mexico City has seen a surge in international visitors since the start of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Authorities had already launched a large-scale security operation covering airports, stadiums, public viewing areas, tourist hotspots and major transportation routes ahead of the tournament.

Despite the enhanced security measures, the incident has raised fresh concerns about tourist safety.

Chinese Embassy Issues Safety Warning

Following the robbery, the Chinese embassy issued an additional advisory to citizens travelling to Mexico for the World Cup.

Travellers were reminded to:

  • Avoid carrying large amounts of cash
  • Avoid wearing expensive jewellery
  • Keep passports and valuables in separate locations
  • Remain vigilant, especially near airports and crowded tourist areas
  • Contact embassy hotlines immediately during emergencies

What Singapore Travellers Should Know

Although the victims were Chinese nationals, the advice applies to all international visitors, including Singaporeans travelling to Mexico for the World Cup.

Travellers are encouraged to use official airport transport services, avoid displaying luxury items, and remain alert when travelling between airports, hotels and tourist attractions.

Large international events often attract both tourists and opportunistic criminals, making personal safety an important consideration alongside travel plans.
