A man riding a three-wheeled personal mobility aid (PMA) in Yishun was taken to hospital after he apparently lost control of his vehicle while travelling at high speed along a pedestrian path.

The incident occurred at around 7:30am on Jun. 14 along Yishun Avenue 8 and has reignited discussions surrounding the safe use of PMAs in Singapore.

Footage of the aftermath, which has since circulated online, showed the rider lying motionless beside an overturned PMA, with visible blood stains on the pavement.

Witness Says Rider Was Travelling at Extremely High Speed

According to captions accompanying the video, the person who uploaded the footage was out jogging when the PMA rider sped past him moments before the crash.

The witness claimed the PMA was travelling at a speed comparable to motorcycles using the adjacent road and said the rider had narrowly avoided colliding with him.

Approximately 10 seconds later, the rider reportedly lost control and crashed without involving any other vehicle or pedestrian.

A passer-by recording the aftermath could repeatedly be heard saying, “speeding”, while expressing concern about touching the injured man before emergency responders arrived.

The witness further stated that the rider only regained partial consciousness after medical personnel reached the scene.

SCDF Conveyed One Person to Hospital

In response to media queries, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed it received a call for assistance at approximately 7:35am on Jun. 14.

One individual was subsequently conveyed to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for treatment.

Authorities have not released details regarding the rider’s injuries or whether any enforcement action will be taken.

No other casualties were reported.

Incident Renews Concerns Over PMA Misuse

Personal mobility aids are intended to assist individuals with mobility challenges and are permitted on public paths, subject to prevailing regulations.

However, reports of PMA misuse have increased public concern in recent years, particularly involving modified devices being used at unsafe speeds.

High-speed riding on pedestrian paths poses significant risks to both users and pedestrians, especially in residential estates where elderly residents, children and joggers frequently share the same space.

Although this particular incident appears to have involved a self-inflicted loss of control, it highlights the dangers associated with operating any mobility device recklessly.

Pedestrian paths are designed for slower-moving traffic and are not built to accommodate vehicles travelling at motorcycle-like speeds.

The incident serves as a reminder that regardless of whether a device is motorised, excessive speed can have serious consequences for both riders and members of the public.
