A 36-year-old driver was arrested within five hours after allegedly fleeing the scene of a traffic accident near Bendemeer MRT station, leaving behind a damaged vehicle containing suspected drugs, vaporisers and a knuckleduster.
The incident occurred along Kallang Bahru on the morning of June 17 and left two people injured.
Police have since arrested the man for multiple offences, including driving under the influence of drugs, dangerous driving and possession of a prohibited weapon.
Driver Allegedly Fled After Collision With Taxi
The accident took place in front of Bendemeer MRT Station Exit B and involved a red car and a ComfortDelGro taxi.
According to authorities, the driver of the red car fled the scene shortly after the collision.
The crash resulted in a 60-year-old taxi driver and his 43-year-old female passenger sustaining injuries. Both were conscious when taken to Raffles Hospital for medical treatment.
Police officers later searched the abandoned vehicle and allegedly discovered suspected controlled substances, drug-related paraphernalia, vaporisers and a knuckleduster.
Severe Damage Seen At Crash Scene
Videos circulating online showed significant damage to both vehicles.
The red car appeared to have crashed into green fencing along the road divider after colliding with the taxi.
Debris, including broken fencing and vehicle parts, was scattered across the road, while engine oil could also be seen leaking from the red car.
Several emergency vehicles attended the scene, including Traffic Police motorcycles, police fast response cars and a police van.
Traffic along Kallang Bahru was temporarily affected following the accident.
Multiple Agencies Involved In Investigation
Police confirmed the suspect was arrested within five hours of the incident.
He is being investigated for several offences, including:
- Driving under the influence of drugs
- Driving without a valid licence
- Dangerous driving
- Possession of a scheduled weapon
- Drug-related offences
The suspected drug-related offences have been referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), while the vaporiser-related offences have been referred to the Health Sciences Authority (HSA).
Investigations remain ongoing.
Bus Services Temporarily Disrupted
Following the accident, the Land Transport Authority temporarily closed part of Kallang Bahru after the Boon Keng Road junction.
SBS Transit also announced that bus services 107 and 175 temporarily skipped the bus stop in front of Bendemeer MRT Station Exit B before normal operations resumed later in the day.
The incident serves as another reminder of the serious legal consequences associated with dangerous driving, illegal substances and prohibited items in Singapore.
