A tragic incident in the US state of Florida has left a family devastated after a toddler was found dead inside a parked vehicle when his father allegedly forgot to drop him off at preschool before heading to work.

The victim, a 23-month-old boy, was discovered unresponsive in the back seat of a sport utility vehicle (SUV) on 29 June. Authorities believe the child had been left inside the vehicle for several hours during the day.

According to local law enforcement, officers were called to a preschool car park at approximately 5.39pm after receiving reports of an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, emergency responders found the toddler deceased inside the vehicle.

Investigators cordoned off the area and carried out extensive forensic examinations around the SUV. As of the latest update, authorities have not confirmed whether criminal charges will be filed in connection with the case.

Father Reportedly Realised Mistake Upon Arriving to Pick Up Child

The heartbreaking discovery was reportedly made when the father arrived at the preschool later in the day, intending to collect his son.

A representative from the preschool said the father had parked his vehicle and was preparing to pick up the child when he suddenly realised his son had never been dropped off that morning.

According to the preschool operator, the father had unknowingly driven to work with the toddler still strapped into the rear seat and completely forgot about the child throughout the day.

The deceased boy was reportedly the third child from the family to attend the preschool.

Preschool Urges Parents to Check Rear Seats

Following the incident, preschool staff urged parents and caregivers to develop a habit of checking the back seats of their vehicles before locking up and walking away.

Experts have long warned that hot vehicles can become deadly within minutes, especially for young children. Even when outside temperatures appear moderate, the temperature inside a parked vehicle can rise rapidly and reach dangerous levels.

Child safety advocates recommend placing essential items such as wallets, mobile phones or work passes in the back seat as a reminder to check for children before exiting the vehicle.

Hot Car Deaths Remain a Persistent Risk

Cases involving children being unintentionally left in vehicles continue to occur around the world each year. Safety organisations have repeatedly stressed that memory lapses can affect even attentive parents, particularly when routines change unexpectedly.

Authorities in Florida are continuing their investigation into the toddler’s death while determining whether further legal action will be taken.

The incident has once again highlighted the importance of vigilance when transporting young children, with experts urging parents never to rely solely on memory when a child’s safety is at stake.
