Heavy rain swept across Bangkok and parts of eastern Thailand on Saturday morning, causing flooding, traffic congestion and travel disruptions in several areas, including locations along the Sukhumvit corridor.
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warned that a large rain band was moving eastward across the capital and neighbouring provinces, bringing persistent showers and raising the risk of flash floods and water accumulation on roads.
Several districts across Bangkok experienced light to moderate rainfall, with authorities closely monitoring drainage systems as wet weather continued throughout the morning.
Areas affected by the rain included Bang Na and Phra Khanong, both located along the greater Sukhumvit region, where motorists encountered slower traffic conditions due to reduced visibility and waterlogged roads.
The weather system also extended beyond Bangkok, affecting provinces such as Samut Prakan, Chachoengsao and Chon Buri, creating challenging travel conditions for commuters and holidaymakers heading towards popular destinations.
As rainfall intensified, officials urged motorists to remain cautious and avoid flooded roads whenever possible.
Sukhumvit Route Among Areas Affected by Flooding
Outside Bangkok, one of the hardest-hit routes was Sukhumvit Road in Chon Buri, a key highway linking the capital to Pattaya and other eastern provinces.
Floodwaters accumulated at several locations along the route, causing severe congestion and slowing traffic heading towards Pattaya. Authorities reported that water levels had risen high enough in some areas to partially cover the roadway, creating difficulties for smaller vehicles.
Major bottlenecks were reported near key intersections and public facilities, where floodwater reduced road capacity and forced drivers to travel at significantly lower speeds.
Officials advised motorists travelling between Bangkok and Pattaya to consider alternative routes, including Motorway No. 7, which remained less affected by flooding and offered a faster journey.
Traffic police continued monitoring conditions as drainage crews worked to clear standing water from affected sections of the road network.
More Rain Expected Across Bangkok and Eastern Thailand
According to weather forecasts, the rain band is expected to continue moving across Bangkok and surrounding provinces, with additional showers likely throughout the day.
Meteorologists warned that rainfall could persist for more than an hour in some locations, increasing the likelihood of further flooding, traffic delays and travel disruptions.
Residents living in low-lying areas have been advised to stay alert for sudden water accumulation, while commuters are encouraged to check traffic conditions before setting out.
The latest weather alert comes during Thailand’s rainy season, when intense downpours frequently lead to flash floods and transport disruptions in both urban and provincial areas.
Authorities said they will continue monitoring weather developments closely and provide updates should conditions worsen across Bangkok, Sukhumvit areas and eastern Thailand.
